Two filters you're probably late replacing: fridge water and HVAC air

The two most-reviewed filters in Amazon's home category, when to change them, and how to buy the right one the first time.

Fridge water filters are supposed to be changed every six months. HVAC filters every one to three months. Most households do neither on schedule, and the failure mode is quiet: water that tastes slightly off, and an air conditioner working harder than it should. These are the two filters that top Amazon's home lists, and what to check before you order.

everydrop Filter 1 (EDR1RXD1): the genuine Whirlpool filter

If your fridge is a Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, or JennAir, there's a good chance it takes everydrop Filter 1. It's the genuine part, certified to reduce 28 contaminants including lead and pharmaceuticals, and it's rated for six months or 200 gallons. Over 108,000 ratings.

Before ordering, check the filter number printed on your current filter or inside the fridge. everydrop numbers them 1 through 6 and the numbers are not interchangeable. Genuine filters cost more than knock-offs, but the third-party ones are where the leak and "filter not recognized" complaints come from.

Filtrete 16x25x1 MERV 11: the HVAC filter most techs recommend

Filtrete is 3M's line, and the MERV 11 (MPR 1000) grade is the sweet spot for most homes. It captures pet dander, pollen, dust mite debris, and smoke particles without restricting airflow the way higher MERV filters can on residential systems. 4.8 stars across 25,000 ratings.

Before ordering, pull your current filter and read the size printed on the frame. 16x25x1 is the most common, but 20x20x1, 20x25x1, and 16x20x1 are also everywhere. Buy a multi-pack and write the change date on the frame edge with a marker.

A schedule that actually sticks

• Fridge filter: change on New Year's Day and July 4th.
• HVAC filter: change on the first of every other month, monthly if you have pets or allergies.
