How to check whether an Amazon deal is worth buying

A practical checklist for comparing price history, exact variants, sellers and the total you will actually pay.

A large discount badge is a starting point for a price check. Our decision is whether the exact product is useful to the buyer and competitively priced against its own history and comparable offers.

This is the checklist we use to review deals. It is an editorial method, not a hands-on product test.

Start with the exact item

Write down the model, size, color and quantity. For a kit, list the batteries, charger and accessories. A cheaper tool without a battery is a different purchase from a complete kit.

A 30-ounce tumbler offer does not establish the value of the 40-ounce version. Open the selected variation again before checkout and confirm the product title and included items.

Compare the price with its own history

Search the product ASIN on CamelCamelCamel. Read the dates and the offer type represented by the chart. A price from Amazon and a price from a third-party seller are different comparisons.

Record the lowest price you can actually see, the period the chart covers and whether today's price has reached the chart yet. If the current listing is below the previous recorded low, describe that specific comparison. Avoid calling it the lowest price ever when the available history cannot establish that.

Compare the whole purchase

Check another retailer for the same model and bundle. Compare shipping, any membership requirement and the final checkout total. A slightly lower headline price may not be a better purchase once delivery is included.

Confirm the seller, condition and delivery date. A used or resale offer should not be described as a new-product deal.

Decide whether the product fits

Ask what job the item needs to do and what would make you return it. For drinkware, that could be a lid unsuitable for carrying in a bag. For an appliance, it could be a basket that does not fit the food you cook.

Use our drinkware comparison for an example of choosing by use before choosing by discount.

Our buy-or-wait checklist

  • Buy only if the exact variant suits the intended use.
  • Check whether the current price is unusual or a frequently repeated promotion.
  • Compare the same condition and included accessories.
  • Wait if a missing measurement, compatibility detail or delivery cost could change the decision.
  • Recheck the offer before paying. A published deal is a dated observation.

Browse the current deal shortlist for offers with dated checks and price-history evidence, or all product picks for items to compare without assuming they are on sale.
